Ginling College, 90th Anniversary Celebration

President Yu, Faculty, Staff and Students of Ginling College, Distinguished Guests.  On behalf of the President of Mount Saint Vincent University, Dr. Sheila Brown, the faculty, staff and students I would like to offer our sincere congratulations on the 90th anniversary of Ginling College.  While our institutions are separated by culture, language and many thousands of kilometres we share the same values and goals.  The history of your college as one devoted to the advancement of women in society mirrors that of Mount Saint Vincent which was founded in 1873 with very similar aims.  When we were advanced to College status in 1925 we were the only College in the Commonwealth dedicated to the education of young women.
Your College motto “Abundant Life” speaks to a life enriched by devoting one’s wisdom and ability to society and its people. This means the College devotes significant effort to the ideological, moral and quality education of students as they take their place in Chinese society.  At   Mount Saint Vincent we are also dedicated to the continuing intellectual, moral, spiritual and physical development of those sharing the university community and teaching the values of social responsibility, ethical concern, and service to the community.
Like 1915, 2005 is an uncertain time.  Ginling was founded during the first great world war.  The College persevered through a century marked by conflict and enormous social and technological change.  Today your graduates and ours face a world very different from that of the 20th century. While conflict among great powers may be a thing of the past we face many other challenges that will require the skills, knowledge and wisdom of highly qualified graduates from institutions like Ginling and Mount Saint Vincent to overcome.
I congratulate you on your first 90 years and look forward to learning of great things from the graduates of Ginling in the next 90 years and beyond.

Mount Saint Vincent University, Michael.
